Sex and Biblical Texts: A Biblical Case for Pleasure and Sex Positivity
Time & Location
About the Event
People of faith have found liberation and inspiration for justice making throughout the stories of the Hebrew Bible and New Testament, in spite of Christianity’s long history as a tool of oppression, shame, and violence. Informed by Queer, Womanist, Black Feminist, and Liberation theologies, we will use Song of Songs (part of both Jewish and Christian scriptures) to explore the biblical possibilities for sexual liberation. Together we will center the needs of the most marginalized and utilize the expertise of our personal and communal experiences to (re)claim faithful frameworks and biblical stories, for ourselves, our communities, and our work.
Lyndsey Godwin is the Assistant Director for the Carpenter Program in Religion, Gender, and Sexuality at Vanderbilt Divinity School. With over a decade as a sexuality educator and community facilitator, she works to connect academics, activist, organizers, artists, faith leaders, and educators in order to have deeper conversations and develop more impactful justice practices. She primarily approaches her work looking at religion, gender, and sexuality first, and prioritizes learner-centered, practical approaches that seek to honor insectionality and disrupt/dismantle systems of oppression and white supremacy. She’s a queer, white, feminist facilitator who seeks to develop anti-racist, liberatory spaces that center engaged, shared learning. She serves as the Co-Chair for “Team Liberation” for Healthy and Free Tennessee and is the Secretary for the SisterSong Board of Directors.
